Stiffness. Pain. Frustration.
If you feel like your shoulder is slowly “locking up,” you may be dealing with Frozen Shoulder, also known as Adhesive Capsulitis. It’s a condition that limits your mobility—not just physically, but in daily life, work, and sleep.

What Is Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)? 

Frozen shoulder is a condition where the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint becomes inflamed, thickened, and tight, severely restricting motion. Over time, this leads to pain, stiffness, and progressive loss of function. 

The 3 Stages of Frozen Shoulder: 

  1. Freezing Phase (Painful) 
  • Gradual onset of pain 
  • Increasing stiffness 
  1. Frozen Phase (Stiff) 
  • Pain may decrease 
  • Significant limitation in motion 
  1. Thawing Phase (Recovery) 
  • Slow return of motion 
  • Requires consistent mobility restoration 

Key Structures Affected: 

  • Joint capsule – thickens and restricts movement 
  • Synovial fluid – may decrease, reducing lubrication 
  • Rotator cuff and surrounding muscles – weaken due to disuse 

 

The Hidden Contributors: Full-Body Mobility Limitations 

While frozen shoulder symptoms are concentrated in the shoulder, the body-wide movement system often plays a critical role in its development and healing. 

Common Contributing Factors: 

  1. Poor Thoracic Spine Mobility

Your mid-back must extend and rotate for full overhead arm movement. A stiff thoracic spine forces the shoulder to strain into positions it's not ready to handle—contributing to inflammation and eventual capsule tightening. 

  1. Core and Pelvic Instability

Functional arm movement begins with trunk control. If your core or pelvis isn't supporting shoulder motion properly, your shoulder must work harder just to stabilize—making it vulnerable to fatigue and protective stiffness. 

  1. Previous Injury or Immobility

After surgery, injury, or prolonged rest, your shoulder’s natural movement rhythm is interrupted. Scar tissue builds. The joint becomes less lubricated. This often triggers the freezing phase. 

  1. Compensations in the Lower Body

Restricted ankle, hip, or foot mobility changes how your body moves when walking, reaching, or rotating—leading to poor loading patterns and asymmetry that increase stress on the shoulder capsule.
