Causes Of Neck Pain

The neck is an extraordinarily flexible and exposed area of the body. This means it can be especially vulnerable to potentially serious injuries caused by overuse, accidents, heavy lifting, and competitive sports.

The following are common causes of pain and tension in the neck area:
Muscle strains

Neck muscle strains are often triggered by:

  • Improper posture

  • Sleeping with your neck in an uncomfortable position

  • Whiplash or sudden jerking of the neck during exercise or accidents

  • Overuse such as hunching over your computer for too long

Worn joints

Over time, your cervical discs may degenerate, causing neck joints to wear down. This is called osteoarthritis of the neck. This condition occurs when the cartilage between your bones deteriorates, resulting in discomfort and affecting joint motion.

Nerve compression

Some neck injuries due to blunt trauma can cause a disc to slip or rupture. This is called a herniated cervical disc and can add pressure on the nerve roots or spinal cord.

Diseases

Certain illnesses such as cancer, meningitis, and rheumatoid arthritis can cause neck pain and swelling of the joints. Osteoporosis is another condition that weakens bones and results in small neck fractures.

Injuries

The neck can be particularly prone to injury and trauma caused by activities where the muscles and ligaments in the neck are forced to extend or move beyond their normal range.

Common causes of neck injury include:

  • Motor vehicle accidents, especially rear-end impact collisions

  • Tripping and falling

  • Lifting heavy objects

  • Sports, such as football, gymnastics, hockey, and horseback riding

Whether minor or severe, neck injuries should not be left untreated. In cases where the cervical vertebrae or neck bones are fractured, the spinal cord may also be damaged. This may result in partial or complete paralysis and even loss of life.

Traditional Treatments

Neck Pain Treatment

Treatment options for neck pain depend on the diagnosis. Typically, the patient may be treated with first aid measures, be prescribed antibiotics, or in severe cases, undergo surgery. However, these traditional solutions have been found to work less than 45% of the time.

At Superior Physical Therapy, we do not recommend any neck pain medication or invasive methods. Instead of focusing on quick fixes, we explore the underlying cause of your neck pain and recommend personalized solutions that are effective, nonsurgical, and nonaddictive.

Superior Physical Therapy

While the treatment options mentioned are fairly common, they may not always address the underlying cause. They may offer short-term relief, but if the root of the issue is not dealt with, the resulting symptoms will continue to be a problem.

At Superior Physical Therapy, we understand the human body's complexities and how pain can travel from one area to another. This is why we follow a holistic approach called the Superior Method. Developed by our own Dr. Andrew Gorecki, this strategy is designed to accurately locate the cause of the pain and deliver more effective solutions.

We offer the following treatment options:

Neck Pain Assessment
  • Full-body Movement Assessment

Successful healing begins with discovering the root cause of the patient’s pain. In most cases, pain in one area is only a symptom of a larger issue. In a full-body movement assessment, the source of the problem is identified by examining the movement of nearby or connected parts. This allows movement to be restored and the body to complete the healing process.

  • Hands-on Manual Therapy

The Superior Method employs the help of a trained therapist certified in functional manual reaction. The therapist uses their hands to facilitate proper motion, improving areas of restriction. This is similar to deep tissue massage, but it incorporates movement.

  • Prescriptive Home Exercise Program

The Superior Method aims to educate patients on how the body moves to ease pain and restore function safely.

With our smartphone app called Movement RX, we empower patients with the knowledge and tools needed to attain long-term physical freedom. All of the instructions provided by your physician will also be video-recorded and sent directly to your email or mobile device.

  • Applied Functional Science

This principles-based method is designed to improve how the mind, body, and spirit work together to facilitate complete healing. All Superior Physical Therapy providers are Fellows of Applied Functional Science through the Gray Institute. This organization is led by the reputable physical therapist, Dr. Gary Gray.

SPT Dry Needling
  • Deep Muscle Stimulation

Mechanical vibrations that penetrate deep into the muscle tissue enable tissue regeneration and improve the lactic cycle, which is one of the most common causes of pain. The procedure also helps boost circulation and lymphatic flow to alleviate pain.

  • Dry Needling

A fast, safe, and virtually pain-free method to reduce pain and address musculoskeletal presentations. In dry needling, trigger points or local contractures are stimulated by monofilament needles.

  • McKenzie Therapy

The McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT) is a distinguished and internationally researched method of diagnosis and treatment for spinal and extremity musculoskeletal conditions. Created by New Zealand Physiotherapist Robin McKenzie, this system has been used globally for over 60 years.

MDT-certified clinicians assess and treat all types of musculoskeletal disorders including complications in the spine, muscles, tendons, and extremity joints.
