Piriformis Syndrome is a neuromuscular condition characterized by pain and discomfort stemming from the compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle. At Superior Physical Therapy, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of Piriformis Syndrome using the principles of Applied Functional Science (AFS).
The piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock, plays a pivotal role in hip rotation. When this muscle irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve beneath it, Piriformis Syndrome occurs, leading to pain, tingling, and numbness radiating from the buttock down the leg.
Pain and Tingling: Often confused with sciatica, the pain typically originates in the buttock and travels down the leg.
Discomfort when Sitting: Prolonged sitting, especially on hard surfaces, can exacerbate the symptoms of Piriformis Syndrome
Anatomical Variations: In some individuals, the sciatic nerve runs through the piriformis muscle, increasing the risk of Piriformis Syndrome.
Muscle Spasms: Injuries or spasms in the piriformis muscle can lead to the syndrome.
Harnessing the principles of AFS, we offer a movement-centric approach to Piriformis Syndrome. AFS, developed by the Gray Institute, allows us to evaluate and treat individuals based on their unique biomechanics and movement patterns.
