What is the McKenzie Method®?

Developed by physiotherapist Robin McKenzie, The McKenzie Method® is a globally researched and acclaimed system of diagnosis, management, and prevention of spinal and extremity musculoskeletal disorders.

Most treatments for musculoskeletal pain only offer short-term relief and do not always address the root cause. With the McKenzie approach, pain is centralized to treat its root source directly rather than just the symptoms.

With a combination of exercise and physical therapy, the spine is extended in order to move the pain away from the arm or leg to the back.

The long-term objective of the McKenzie Method® is to empower patients to self-manage neck or back pain and prevent recurrences.

How It Works?

The McKenzie Method® is more than just a series of exercises. It involves various activities and test movements to assess the patient's pain response. This information is then used to build an appropriate management plan designed to alleviate pain and discomfort.

A key element of the method is the initial assessment which involves a physical exam and thorough review of patient history. Both are performed to measure the degree of impairment and identify existing disorders such as tumors, fractures, or infections that may interfere with the efficacy of exercise-based treatment.

After the assessment, the clinician guides the patient in self-treatment. This results in improved outcomes and lower healthcare costs.

What Conditions Does The McKenzie Method® Treat?

The McKenzie Method of MDT® is used to assess and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal problems, including:
