The Golfer’s Elbow: Exploring Effective Treatments

Golfer’s elbow, medically known as medial epicondylitis, is a condition characterized by pain and irritation on the inside of the elbow. Despite its name, it’s not limited to golfers—any repetitive gripping, lifting, or wrist-flexing activity can contribute to it.

At its core, this condition involves microstress and irritation of the flexor-pronator tendon, which attaches to the medial epicondyle of the humerus. Over time, repeated strain without adequate recovery leads to tissue breakdown, reduced tendon capacity, and pain.

While the pain shows up at the elbow, the true cause often lies elsewhere.  Golf is a full-body, rotational movement, relying on what’s called the kinetic chain—a sequence of energy transfer from the ground, through the legs and hips, into the torso, and finally into the arms and club.

When this chain breaks down, the elbow pays the price.

Common contributing factors include:

  • Limited hip mobility → forces arms to generate more power
  • Poor thoracic spine rotation → increases stress on the elbow
  • Weak or poorly timed core activation → disrupts sequencing
  • Grip inefficiencies → overloads the forearm muscles
  • Overuse without recovery → reduces tissue tolerance

In essence, golfer’s elbow is rarely just an “elbow problem.” It’s a movement problem.

Recognizing the Symptoms

  • Pain or tenderness on the inside of the elbow
  • Discomfort with gripping, lifting, or swinging
  • Stiffness or weakness in the forearm
  • Pain that worsens after activity

Left unaddressed, these symptoms can gradually limit both performance and daily function.

Preventing or healing golfer’s elbow requires a shift in perspective—from treating pain to optimizing movement.

Key strategies include:

1. Improve Mobility Where You Need It

Focus on restoring motion in the hips, thoracic spine, and shoulders so the elbow doesn’t have to compensate.

2. Build Strength Through Real Movement

Train the body in 3D patterns that reflect the demands of golf—rotation, shifting, and deceleration.

3. Optimize Swing Mechanics

Small adjustments in sequencing and grip can dramatically reduce stress on the elbow.

4. Manage Load

Balance practice volume with recovery to allow tissues to adapt and heal.

Applied Functional Science Physical Therapy: A Smarter Approach

Applied Functional Science (AFS) looks beyond the site of pain and asks a better question:

“Why is the elbow being overloaded in the first place?”

Using a 3D movement assessment, an AFS-trained physical therapist evaluates how your body moves during real-life and sport-specific tasks.

Treatment may include:

  • Multi-planar lunges with rotation to restore mobility and sequencing
  • Load-specific training that mimics the golf swing
  • Chain-reaction exercises to improve energy transfer through the body
  • Deceleration training to reduce stress on the elbow during follow-through

This approach doesn’t just calm symptoms—it builds a more resilient, efficient golfer.

How Class IV Red Light Laser Therapy Can Help

While movement-based therapy addresses the root cause, Class IV Red Light Laser Therapy can accelerate the healing process, making an excellent adjunct therapy.

This advanced technology works by delivering light energy deep into tissues, helping to:

  • Stimulate cellular repair and regeneration
  • Improve blood flow to the injured tendon
  • Reduce inflammation and pain
  • Enhance tissue healing capacity

When combined with Applied Functional Science physical therapy, laser treatment becomes a powerful adjunct—helping you feel better faster while your movement improves.

Golfer’s elbow isn’t just about the elbow—it’s about how your body moves, transfers energy, and handles load.  When you address the why behind golfer’s elbow, you don’t just relieve pain, you unlock a smoother swing, better performance, and a body that’s built to keep playing.

At Superior Physical Therapy, we combine AFS physical therapy with Class IV Red Light Laser therapy to get you out of pain and fix the movement issues that are holding you back from your best season ever!
