The Hidden Cause of Golf Pain: How Limited Hip Motion Leads to Back, Knee, and Shoulder Problems

Golfers often assume that pain in their back, knee, or shoulder must mean something is wrong with that specific joint. But in many cases, the real source of the problem is somewhere else entirely. The most common hidden cause of golf pain is limited hip motion. Limited hip motion leads to back, knee, and shoulder problems.

The golf swing is a powerful rotational movement that relies heavily on the hips. When the hips move properly, they allow energy to transfer smoothly from the ground, through the body, and into the club. But when hip mobility is restricted, the body still tries to complete the swing—and other joints are forced to take on more stress than they were designed to handle.

How Limited Hip Motion Creates Pain

Healthy hips rotate and shift during the golf swing, helping to generate power while protecting the spine and other joints. When the hips cannot move through their full range, compensation begins almost immediately.  Common problems that develop include:

Lower Back Pain
When the hips don’t rotate well, the lower back twists more than it should during the swing. Over time, this extra strain can irritate joints, muscles, and discs in the spine.

Knee Pain
Limited hip motion can force the knees—especially the lead knee—to absorb more rotational stress during the follow-through.

Shoulder Pain
If the hips fail to generate proper rotational power, the shoulders and arms may overwork to produce club speed, increasing stress on the rotator cuff. These issues often appear unrelated, but they frequently share the same underlying cause: the hips are not moving well enough to support the demands of the golf swing.

Why Treating the Pain Alone Isn’t Enough

Traditional treatments often focus only on the painful area. A golfer with back pain might receive medication, injections, or treatments directed solely at the spine. While these approaches can temporarily reduce symptoms, they may not correct the movement problem that caused the pain in the first place. If hip mobility remains limited, the same stresses return when the golfer resumes swinging.

A Better Approach: Applied Functional Science

Applied Functional Science physical therapy evaluates how the body moves as an integrated system. Instead of focusing only on the painful joint, therapists assess how the entire body functions during movements similar to the golf swing. This type of movement analysis often reveals restrictions in the hips that are forcing the spine, knees, or shoulders to compensate.

Treatment focuses on restoring three-dimensional hip movement—including rotation, shifting, and loading—so the body can distribute forces properly again. Exercises are customized to match the real demands golfers place on their bodies during play.

Restoring a Stronger, Healthier Swing

When hip mobility improves, many golfers notice several positive changes:

  • Less stress on the lower back

  • Improved stability in the knees

  • Reduced shoulder strain

  • Better balance and power during the swing

Perhaps most importantly, golfers often regain the ability to play comfortably and confidently again.

Don’t Let Hidden Movement Problems Ruin Your Game

Pain doesn’t have to be part of your golf experience. In many cases, addressing the underlying movement limitations—especially in the hips—can make a dramatic difference.

Applied Functional Science physical therapy helps identify these hidden issues and restore the natural movement patterns your body needs for a smooth, powerful, and pain-free golf swing. ⛳
