What Do You Find Out When Taking a Movement Screen?

January 17, 2016

The number one most valuable piece of information found during a movement screen is where you are successful with movement and where you are not successful. This allows someone to point you in the right direction so that you are safe and effective and also working on making yourself better at whatever your deficits are.

In the movement screen that we perform called 3D MAPS we look at how every muscle and every joint moves in three planes of motion, we look at how mobile the body is in those motions, and how stable the body is during those motions.  This assessment helps us understand how your flexibility, strength, balance, pain, coordination all blend together to allow you to move.

Ideally this movement screen is best performed on someone who can move pain free or with very little pain.  It can be applied to anyone however and give very valuable information.  It is something that should be done every 3-6 months and saved and used to compared for future reference so that we can see how someone’s movement changes over time.  It is the only assessment available that gives us information about how the musculoskeletal system is functioning.  There is no MRI, Xray, EMG, or any other fancy machine that will give us as much information about the neuromusculoskeletal system as a movement screen.

If you care about your body as much or more than you care about your teeth, you should get a movement screen.
