The Body is Designed to Heal Itself

November 27, 2022

99% of back pain goes away if you do the right things. The body is designed to heal itself. But an environment must be created to allow for healing.

We’ve talked in other blog posts how medications, injections, and surgeries, the 3 most common treatments for back pain, don’t fix the environment your low back is living in. They may block the pain or fix some damage, but they don’t change those problems that are causing the damage and the pain in the first place.

Even if we are not to the point where we are taking medications, getting injections, or contemplating surgery, we are probably not working on creating an environment for our backs to heal. We are probably doing what we instinctively think we should do, and what many doctors prescribe—we stop moving. We think if we lay in bed and rest our back, the back will get better. But it won’t. The pain might go away for a time, but it will return someday when we reach around to get something out of the back seat, stand-up out of a chair, or some other harmless movement.

First step is to identify the actual problem, the movement dysfunction that is really causing your low back pain. At Superior Physical Therapy, we use an extensive movement test called 3-D MAPS (Movement Analysis & Performance System). It shows us everything that is going on with respect to your muscles, ligaments, and joints.  But you can do some simple tests at home to see if your back pain is treatable.

First, identify what activities—walking, standing, bending, squatting, putting on shoes, lying in bed, sitting in a chair—cause the most low back pain. Now move into a totally different position. Does the pain go away, or decrease? Does the pain come back by repeating a motion or activity?

If the pain is reproducible, in other words, if the pain gets less, then more intense if we move certain ways, we know we have a movement dysfunction that is causing our back pain.

That’s very good news! Why? Because movement dysfunctions can be fixed. When they are fixed, a healing environment is created, and back pain vanishes.

It’s so important to get rid of low back pain.  When we do, we sleep better, our mood improves and so do our relationships. Pain relief also allows us to move more, and more movement improves overall health.  Many people don't realize that being sedentary increases the risk for heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression, and other major health issues.

So, it’s time to find out what’s really causing our back pain, fix movement problems, and allow our backs to heal permanently.
