If you’ve had a hip replacement, or you have one scheduled, this book was written for you

You did everything right.

You trusted your surgeon. You showed up to your appointments. You followed the precautions. You did the exercises they gave you.

And something still feels off.

Maybe you’re limping a little more than you expected. Maybe your back started aching in a way it never did before surgery. Maybe you got back on the golf course and your follow-through is just gone. Maybe you tried a hike and your hip fatigued in ways it didn’t even before the operation.

Or maybe your surgery is still ahead of you and you’re determined to do this right the first time.

Either way, this book was written for you.

The gap

What you got at discharge was a handshake and a sheet of paper

Here’s something most patients are never told. Hip replacement surgery fixes the joint. It does not fix everything else.

For years before your surgery your body was quietly building compensations around a deteriorating hip. Shifting weight. Shortening your stride. Tightening some muscles, switching others off. Your nervous system rewired itself around the pain.

The surgery removes the pain. Those compensations don’t come out on the operating table with the old joint.

That is the gap this book fills. 178 pages of what should have come home with you.

What’s inside

178 pages. Every week mapped.

Here’s a piece of what you get.

The week-by-week roadmap, from the day of surgery through week 12 and beyond, so you always know whether you’re on track.

The 7 recovery mistakes that stall more hip replacements than the surgery itself.

Why the hip doesn’t heal in isolation, and why clinics that only look at the hip miss the real drivers.

The 6–12 week scar tissue window: the one deadline in recovery that’s real, and what to do before it closes.

The warning signs every patient should know. Which ones mean call your surgeon, and which mean your rehab plan needs a second look.

Return plans for golf, hiking, and gardening. Not “you’re cleared,” but the actual progressions that get you there.

How the book works

Before, During, and After

Three stages, eight parts, twenty chapters. Read it front to back or jump straight to where you are.

Stage One

Before

The decisions you make before surgery determine the recovery you have after it. Prehab, surgical approach, and the one choice almost nobody makes deliberately.

Stage Two

During

The first days home, a full week-by-week roadmap, the warning signs, scar tissue, strength, balance, gait, and the return to golf, trails, and the garden.

Stage Three

After

Staying strong for life. What long-term hip health actually takes once formal rehab ends.

The one deadline in recovery that’s real

From Chapter 9 · Scar Tissue: The Invisible Barrier

Most of what you hear about recovery timelines is soft. Six weeks. Twelve weeks. Listen to your body. Useful, but vague.

The scar tissue window is different. In the weeks after surgery your body lays down collagen to heal the tissue that was cut. Early on that collagen is disorganized and pliable, and it can be shaped by how you move. Somewhere between six and twelve weeks it starts to mature and cross-link, and it becomes far harder to change.

That is a real biological deadline, and almost nobody tells patients about it.

Which is why the patient who plateaus at week seven and waits to see whether it improves on its own is not being patient. They are spending the most valuable weeks they have.

Doctor of Physical Therapy · Fellow of Applied Functional Science · Author of The Truth About Low Back Pain · 15 years treating patients in Traverse City

In 2006, a back injury put me through two years of everything wrong with how our system treats pain. Pills, injections, and a hundred-thousand-dollar surgery that didn’t work.

Then a physical therapy school professor found the real problem in one visit: a stiff hip that nobody, in two years, had ever examined. Two weeks after we fixed it, my pain was gone.

I’ve spent my career since making sure my patients don’t have to learn that lesson the way I did.

Real patients

From people who’ve been exactly where you are

Dr. Ken Louis

“As a neurosurgeon I was concerned this new right hip and sacroiliac pain was going to be chronic. Both of my therapists were excellent. Now that I’m in my 6th week the pain is gone. Truly impressive.”

— Dr. Ken Louis

Fred Page

“I came to Superior with hip pain. They completely resolved my issues. Even before my final session, I reached my goal of walking 3 miles with minimal pain. They are the best.”

— Fred Page

Who it’s for

You should read this book if

You’ve had a hip replacement and you want a full, active recovery, not just a functional one
You have surgery scheduled and you want to walk in prepared instead of hoping for the best
You finished PT somewhere else and plateaued before you got where you wanted to be
You want to get back to golf, hiking, gardening, or whatever you were doing before your hip started failing you
You’re somewhere between 60 and 75 and you refuse to accept that slowing down is inevitable
You want to understand what’s happening in your own body instead of just being told what to do

Questions

Before you order

Is the book actually free?

Yes. Free book, free shipping, free digital edition. No trial, no subscription, no card required. I give it away because a book on your counter does more for your recovery than a brochure in the trash.

Is this just a long advertisement for your clinic?

No. It’s 178 pages of how hip replacement recovery actually works, written so you could follow it without ever calling us. Superior Physical Therapy appears in it because I practice there, and there’s a standing offer at the end. That’s the extent of it.

My surgery hasn’t happened yet. Should I wait?

Read it now. Chapters 1 through 3 are about the decisions you make before surgery, and those decisions shape the recovery you get afterward. The clock on prehab is already running.

I’m four months out and stuck. Is it too late?

No. Chapter 18 was written specifically for people who are further out than they expected to be and still not where they wanted to land.

Do I need a referral to see you?

Not in Michigan. It’s a direct access state, so you can come to us without one, and your insurance including Medicare covers your care either way. Chapter 3 covers this in detail.

What do you do with my address?

We ship you a book. We will not spam, rent, or sell your information, and you will never get a sales call you didn’t ask for.

No cost, no catch.

The book is free, we ship it, and you will never get a sales call you didn’t ask for. If it doesn’t change how you think about your recovery, email me and tell me why. I read every one.

One last thing

Every week I see patients who waited too long to get the right help. They spent months somewhere that didn’t have the time or the approach to get them fully back. They accepted a plateau as permanent. They quietly gave up on the golf, the trails, the garden.

They didn’t have to accept that.

Your hip replacement was supposed to give you your life back. This book is how you make sure it actually does.
